In 2010 Kerri Quigley, a Parsons School of Design grad working in the fashion industry decided to start a sewing class for children in Brooklyn. What started as a small workshop grew into a program offering classes, camps and birthday parties. Children as young as six can join a class after school or on weekends and learn to use a real sewing machine! "While we do equip all of our machines with sewing speed control and needle guards, young children are fearless and pick up sewing pretty quickly," says Kerri of her 8-13 week programs that run in the Fall, Winter and Spring. In addition to children's classes, they also offer Teen Classes for ages 13-17yrs old and private lessons for adults. The best part of The Fashion Class is the free professional fashion show held at the end of each term. Similar to a dance recital, the fashion show is the perfect ending to showcase the students' hard work as they model their creations down a 24' light-up runway!
During June, July and August The Fashion Class offers summer camp for full days 9a-5p. Students engage in sewing, fashion illustration, branding and marketing and accessory design classes throughout the day. Guest speakers from the fashion industry and modeling worlds stop by to chat and teach specialized skills like confidence while walking the runway. All supplies are included in fashion classes and camp.
Birthday parties at The Fashion Class are truly fabulous. Guests can choose a sewing project, craft project or a full runway show complete with hair, makeup and clothing styling. Party goers have access to the full, pink, 3000 square foot facility with separate sewing and party rooms. Pricing is per child.
" I am thrilled to have The Fashion Class open in such a wonderful community as Merrick. The response so far has been amazing, I'm excited to meet the future fashionistas of Nassau County!"
